What is PCOS?

At Plaza OB/GYN, our doctors take special care in managing PCOS, a medical condition that affects many women and leads to several troubling ailments. PCOS creates a hormone imbalance and can lead to diabetes and heart disease. PCOS also increases male androgen levels, particularly in women smokers. Genetically passed down in families, PCOS can be controlled with a healthy lifestyle and hormone therapy if needed.

Symptoms of PCOS:

  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Hair on face and body
  • Lack of regular menstrual cycles
  • Infertility
  • Mood swings

A family history of PCOS, diabetes, or irregular periods are all risk factors to consider. If you are experiencing difficulty getting pregnant, diabetes-like symptoms, mood swings, or irregular vaginal bleeding, they may be signs of PCOS. Contact Plaza OB/GYN if you experience any of these symptoms.

As with many other conditions or diseases, early diagnosis and treatment is instrumental in eliminating future complications. Weight loss and quitting smoking are additional methods of balancing hormones and boosting menstrual cycle and ovulation. Although there is no cure for PCOS, controlling and managing lifestyle choices are examined to be great options

PCOS fertility treatments

If a healthy lifestyle does not reduce symptoms, hormone therapy and medicine are effective alternatives if needed. Special medication to jump-start ovulation can be given to help remedy issues. In the event of planning a pregnancy, birth control hormones can be given to correct menstrual cycle problems. Other methods of controlling increased levels of androgen include birth control medication, patches, and vaginal rings. Fertility treatments may become an option if needed as well.
