Hormone Replacement Therapy

Bio-Identical Hormones are most effective when administered as pellets. This allows for individualized dosing and delivers a steady stream of hormones into the patient’s system. The pellet implants are most commonly compounded using biologically identical hormones Estradiol and Testosterone. Pellet insertion is a relatively simple in-office procedure done under local anesthesia. The pellets are inserted under the fatty lining of the skin, either in the lower abdomen or the upper buttocks through a very small incision. The incision is easily closed with surgical glue or sterile-tape strips. Implants placed under the skin consistently release small, physiologic doses of hormones, which have been shown to have significant benefits.

Pellet Implants typically last between 3-5 months, depending on how rapidly the hormones are metabolized. After insertion of the pellets, vigorous physical activity should be avoided for a few days, or as suggested by the Plaza OB/GYN staff.

For others, it may take up to two weeks to notice a marked difference. The pellets never need to be removed as they are completely dissolved by the body.

Generally, there are minimal side effects linked to pellet implant procedures. Complications can include minor bleeding, bruising, infection, and pellet extrusion. Other than minor bruising, other complications are extremely rare. Hormone side effects do vary and will be discussed with our expert physicians.
