Managing Work During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can affect your ability to work, but common discomforts like nausea, tiredness, and back pain do not qualify as a disability. Even complications of pregnancy or unrelated illnesses don’t automatically qualify for disability.

Communication is Key

If you’re struggling with work tasks due to pregnancy, your first step should be to speak with your employer. Your physician might authorize physical restrictions on your work based on a complete job description from your employer.

Employer’s Role

If work restrictions prevent you from performing your job, your employer should find you a less demanding position or, if that’s not possible, consider granting you disability leave. If work becomes too uncomfortable, you might discuss a leave of absence with your employer.

Physician’s Role in Granting Disability

Your physician will not grant disability unless you’re restricted from all work. Most employers provide disability leave starting two weeks before your due date and extending six weeks after delivery. Early disability is granted only with proper medical justification and is focused on conditions that might jeopardize your ability to nurture, protect, and promote the development of your unborn child. Normal physical or emotional changes of pregnancy do not qualify for disability.
