Female Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence, or the inability to control the bladder, is usually due to weakening of the pelvic muscles, urinary tract infections, and medication.
Accidental leaks can happen when you sneeze, cough, laugh, or during general exercise.
What is Urinary Incontinence?
Problems with urinating can have different causes and symptoms. It can range from trouble with leaking, incomplete voiding, bladder spasms or other types of embarrassing, painful or uncomfortable symptoms. A urodynamic study can test bladder voiding functions and determine the cause of the symptom. This study will help doctors determine the right therapy solution for you.
Causes of urinary incontinence include:
- Bladder irritation
- Urinary tract infections
- Weaker pelvic muscles
Along with urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse involves the loss of support for any pelvic organ, such as the bladder and uterus, resulting in the drop of that organ from its normal position. When this occurs, pressure is put on other organs, potentially causing pain, discomfort, incontinence, or herniation of the bladder or rectum.
Urinary Incontinence in Women Treatment
Depending on the underlying problem and severity of the condition, treatment may involve exercises, medication, or surgery. Urodynamic studies are done in the office to find the cause of the incontinence. In mild or moderate cases, non-surgical treatment may be effective.
- Pelvic reconstructive surgery
However, in cases where symptoms of pelvic prolapse are uncomfortable or bothersome, surgical repair or replacement of the supportive tissues surrounding the sagging organ may be necessary. Our physicians have extensive experience with pelvic reconstructive surgery, which is performed through the vagina. During the procedure the prolapsed organs will be repositioned. Also, women who have stress urinary incontinence may require a sling procedure to correct the incontinence. One Houston patient commended the Plaza OB/GYN doctors for “eliminating an awkward and uncomfortable situation.”
